It was way too early. After a night of fitful sleep, it was way too early by anyone's standards. Getting to school at six in the morning was crazy, even for her. But from the moment she woke up, a melody plagued her. Her hands were tingling, begging to glide along the keys of a piano. Her family used to have one at their old hom... but she could never have touched that piano again. It held... too many memories...
Running a hand through her white hair, the girl sighed, the sound echoing loudly in the empty hallways. "Best not go there..." she whispered. "Just find a piano, Karma... Don't think about anything else..." |
But she couldn't help remembering her dream. A silver beast slashed open her face. The next thing she knew, she was lying on a hospital bed, the operating light above her blocked by Professor Stein's head. He turned the bolt in his head and handed her a mirror. She looked like a ragdoll, completely covered in stitches. As she was about to scream, Stein held up a needle and thread, the silve glinting in the light. He placed the sharp point at her lower lip and -
Karma shuddered. Gory manga made her happy, but dreams like that... As the scythe returned from her thoughts, she found herself in a room with a piano. Large mirrors covered the walls, but nothing else aside from the piano and its bench were in the room. It looked like it may have once been a classroom. But there was something familiar about the room. Karma knew she'd never been there before or ever seen a picture, but it was familiar nonetheless. Then it hit her: her mother's stories from her days at the academy. But which story? The scythe sat at the bench, running her fingers over the keys of the paino. If I stay here all day... would anyone even notice? Or care...? she thought. The melody tinkled softly in the back of her mind.(( This is the song in Karma's head. It's what Sayuri's soul most likely sounds like to me.))[/div]

Garu always had a thing about time. He would rather be early than late on any day. Even if his stomach did have so many butterflies it was like a Lepidopterology lab was built directly into his stomach walls. To be fair, anyone in his position would probably be just as nervous. A witch inside the walls of Shibusin. The place his parents use to tell him horror stories about. A place filled with people who would like nothing more than to eat his soul for power. He felt like a steak inside a lion pin. At least he had soul protect, he just hoped it was enough. Garu pulled the sleeve of his white fur rimmed jacket up a bit on his right arm, just enough to view a silver watch on a leather strap, the phases of the moon displayed clearly right above the six. He had time to kill and then some, even by his standards. Damn his nervousness. "Oh well. I suppose I should look about this whole...place." he muttered aloud to himself in a bit of a hesitant tone to himself, as if trying to convince himself that was indeed what he wanted. He slowly surveyed the halls and rooms as he passed them. They all looked about the same, he guessed that was to be suspected after all, according to his Dad this place was ran by someone with extreme OCD. After a good five minutes in a slow amble he heard a piano. "Curiouser and Curiouser" he said half to himself, peaking around a door frame, watching whoever this was playing the piano silently. He leaned in the doorway, brow raised and arms crossed. ( This is what I think Garu's soul sounds like.)

Karma hadn't realized her partner had been woken up by a dream as well.
Admittedly, Sayuri's scary dreams usually involved giant cookies falling from the sky and crushing Karma. She had no clue what had woken her partner up, but her nightmare had involved cute animals at a petting zoo turning into witches. In her dream, she had been powerless to protect all the children and her parents and partner and surrogate aunt and... She had woken up as a bird swooped in, and attacked her eyes. Too many scary movies with Karma-chan. Also, Alfred Hitchcock was screwed up, but totally right. Birds are scary.
She followed the feeling of Karma's familiar soul, trying to find where the girl had gone. Sayuri had quickly gotten dressed and dashed out the door as soon as she heard the scythe leave their apartment. Without making coffee! Their regular barista at Deathbucks had said Karma hadn't even stopped by for her usual fix when Sayuri rushed in. She now carried a caramel machiatto and a extra-large cup for Karma.
Seeing a tall guy with white hair standing outside a classroom door surprised her. She thought that the pair would be the only two in the school this early.
"Morning!" she chirped at the guy, standing behind him. "What are you here so early for? Oh, Karma-chan, there you are!" She tried her best to nudge him out of her way without spilling the coffee or seeming disrespectful, and came into the room. She set Karma's coffee on top of the piano.
((Oh dear oh dear! My impression of Karma's soul is The Last Serenade by Lili Haydn. Couldn't find a decent video. I really have more of a color for Sayuri's, an electric, almost crackling blue-green. Sorry for the sucky post. ))

The faint little melody began to get a little louder, causing the weapon to plink out the notes a tiny bit at a time. Suddenly, a song flowed from her fingertips as they glided across the keys. Her head bobbed to the beat, eyes closed in concentration. She clung to the melody in her head, afraid of losing it before her muscles had committed it to memory. She wished so badly that she'd brought a notebook with her from home. She could compose music to play at Cloud Nine, the little jazz place downtown. To actually play for an audience and not be judged by people based on her "scary" appearance or soul, but solely on her talent. Something she'd worked on for so long all on her own... well, except for the scale that started it. She'd gotten a little help there...
Just as the melody came to a fortissimo, a familiar, annoyingly cheerful voice called out, "Oh, Karma-chan, there you are!" Karma's hands slammed on the keys, fingers splayed to mash as many notes as possible, making a sound that would make one cringe. She'd lost it. Her concentration having been broken, she lost the sound of the melody. Sighing, the scythe turned to face Sayuri, cheerful as ever, even if it was early. Her meister bounced over in her usual way and set a Deathbucks coffee on the piano. Must refrain from yelling about setting anything but music on such a beautiful instrument... |
she thought to herself. "Thanks, Sayuri," Karma muttered, grabbing the coffee and taking a swig. It was already a little colder than she liked it, but whatever. An extra-large black coffee was an extra-large black coffee. No way was she passing it up, especially this early in the morning. How had she functioned this whole time? More importantly, how had she forgotten her coffee that morning?
Something caught her attention out of the corner of her eye. With coffee still up to her mouth, Karma glanced in the direction of a tall young man standing in the doorway. His shock of white hair almost made her choke on her coffee. It reminded her of the dream. Of the beast that had attacked her. Of the real life beast that had attacked her as well. The hair on the back of her neck stood on end, and immediately the fight-or-flight instinct kicked in. She bolted from the piano bench, ready to leave the room, but stopped. It wasn't her dream. It wasn't him. She had nothing to fear.
But meeting strangers wasn't really her forte. And he hadn't really made it seem like he wanted acknowledgment from either young woman, so Karma figured it be perfectly acceptable to simply ignore him. Turning her attention back to her meister, she said, "Sorry for just up and leaving this morning. Just had this crazy thing where I had to play, ya know? Oh, did Spikey-sensei assign anything yesterday? I totally fell asleep halfway through." She hoped that Sayuri understood her little nickname for her adopted uncle, Sayuri's father, Black Star.[/div]

Garu lost himself in the music as as he listened to the piano. Whoever this person was, the least he could say about her was that she was talented, but that would be an under statement. Truthfully he wouldn't have minded seeing her in a more professional venue that an empty classroom, she had talent. More than he did. He could kind of sing and play the harmonica, but not that well, and most people can't appreciate a decent howl. Humans were weird like that.
His musical trance was soon broken by a rather chipper and cheery voice. It made him jump a small bit, his man raced directly towards the short path to his fear of being found out. This soon? Oh god it was foolish plan. He didn't even last an hour. Turning around he saw a girl dressed mostly in blue with a smile in her face and coffee in her hands. If he was paying attention, there would have been no way he missed the scent of that coffee. He'd need to work on that later.
At least this person seemed nice enough given the circumstances he was in. "Mornin' " he said as politely as possible, before he started to scratch behind his ears a bit. "Erm, I'm new. I'm just looking around I guess. I just followed the music. " he said, his unsureness as blatant as a shout in a library. "I got a bunch of classes I have no idea where they are." he said holding up his schedule as if was a license to be in the place.
Garu flinched a tiny bit as the cacophony of noise filled his sensitive ears from the slam on the piano. Something about the girls reminded him of something. He just couldn't for the life of him figure out what.

"Got it! I'm not going to mess with the creative process or nothing, don't worry." Sayuri messed up Karma's hair then carefully smoothed it back down with a smile. Couldn't have her partner looking like crap around a new guy, even if she had no interest in dating. First impressions are so very very important. Of course, slamming on the piano probably hadn't been the best move on Karma's part either. She ignored Karma's nickname for Daddy. "No assignment, he just told stories of them olden days when our dinosaur parents were our age again." She turned to face the new boy with the white hair. He wasn't bad looking, but when she tried to see his soul, it was a little fuzzy. She squinted and tilted her head, frowning a little, then shrugged it off. She could tell he wasn't a weapon, that was sure. That left the option of meister! She smiled like a kid with the greatest Halloween haul ever and almost skipped up to him. "Hello new person! I am the great assassin Sayuri*Star, a scythe meister! The girl with the coffee addiction is Karma Evans, my partner! Need some help?"She snatched his schedule out of his hand, making note of the name at the top. Garu Hemming. He looked like a Garu. Not that she had ever met anyone named Garu before. The name just fit. "Okay, Mr. Garu! You have homeroom with us and Daddy! We'll be able to show you around!" She said, pointing to the teacher name by the first class. Star, The Great Assassin Black.[/blockquote] ((Sorry it's a bit of a fail post this time around.. xP))

The scythe scowled, glaring daggars at her meister as she ruffled her silver hair. "Do I look like Kuro-rii?" |
she growled, referring to the Star family dog. She sighed a little as Sayuri fixed her hair. She'd always had a thing about people touching her hair. It bothered her, made her scar prickle. Maybe because her father always stroked her hair...? "Enough of that, Karma!" she silently screamed at herself. "Focus on school work! Or piano! Or - Hey? No homework? Sweet!" Karma let out a very soft giggle at Sayuri's words. Oh how she hated the cute laugh that didn't suit her... "Back in the Dino Days, huh? Jeez, he never gets tired of those stories, does he? Although, I don't think some of the adventures your parents had every really happened... I think he's making some of them up to look cool for his students..." Karma followed Sayuri with her eyes as she bounced over to the young man. He seemed... abnormally nervous to the weapon. But that could easily be written off as first day jitters. She knew what it was like to be the new kid once as well. But still... something was very off. He almost looked guilty. About what, Karma couldn't guess. As her partner introduced the girls to him, the scythe raised her hand in an almost half wave. It was a lame wave to be sure, but she wasn't the most friendly of people. Not on purpose, she just... had difficulties trusting people.
"Okay, Mr. Garu! You have homeroom with us and Daddy! We'll be able to show you around!" Sayuri decided. "Wait, we're wha...?" Karma began to say. But her mother's words echoed in her mind, "You need to make friends, Karma. Or at least show a bit of kindness to people. Open up more." She sighed. Might as well help someone out. It'd be her one good deed for the day. She motioned for the two to follow her. "Come on, it's this way. Warning ya now, Spikey-sensei's loud and obnoxious. Might wanna bring earplugs tomorrow," the scythe suggested.[/div]

Garu flinched back a bit as Sayuri lunged at in an eager introduction. "Oh, right. My name is Garu. Erm, Garu Hemming. I'm a meister. Partnerless, but the fact is still true." he said in a calm even voice. As he looked over the two closer. He supposed it was a case of opposites attracting if these two were partners. They certainly seemed like they had next to nothing in common.
It did get him to thinking. What would his partner be like? Would he even find one? The longer he was here the more second thoughts and worries started plaguing him. It just seemed like his original plan was relying on too many variables for it to rest comfortably on his tactician soul.
"Oh well. If we share a homeroom it's a good thing we met then." He said giving a small nod towards Karma "I look forward to working with you both. I mean if I get a partner." he said with a small nod towards Karma. "And I apologize if I intruded on something private. I just rather liked the melody. Didn't mean to be a creeper or anythin'." he said in a bit of a grunt.
As they started to move, Garu watched his feet. "So the Teachers your Dad? That's gotta be a lot of pressure. If my Dad was watching my every move...well I don't think it would be good for me," he said, trying to lighten the situation.

"You'll get a partner, I'm sure of it! Sayuri said, grabbing the big guy's wrist and beginning to drag him down the hallway. "And knowing how things are around here, it'll happen in the strangest way possible. Karma and I lucked out - we're practically related. Well, not really, but our parents may as well be siblings." She let go of his wrist, and turned around, walking backwards, the heels of her boots click-clicking on the floor. She couldn't imagine being partners with anyone else. It must be hard, she thought to herself, Having to find someone out of the crowd whose soul wavelength is close enough to yours. She understood how Mommy had been the only one who appreciated Daddy's greatness of their first day, and Uncle Soul had played piano for Aunt Maka when they met. In fact, it was in a room at the school, she realized. Maybe even the one they were just in. There were only so many pianos in the school. She skipped topics, answering Garu's questions. "Daddy's surpassed the gods, but that's no big deal. I'm gonna surpass him, and it'll take less time, too!" She paused. And yeah, he can be loud at times. I mean, half his sentances end with YAHOOOOO!"Her shout echoed through the empty hallways, a feminine version of what her father had sounded like when he was her age. "I can tell ya exactly what he'll say when you get into the class, but I'd need to warm up my voice some more. It'll be intense" She added, turning around to face the front. [/blockquote]

Glad to be ahead of Garu and Sayuri, Karma could feel her face heat up. Someone aside from Sayuri had listen to her song and liked it. As her friend, Sayuri had to say nice things, even if her songs were terrible. But to have an outsider, someone not obligated to encourage or compliment her, saying something nice about her abilities was... well, nice. She covered her ears, knowing that they'd be the reddest and stick out like a sore thumb poking out from her white hair. But a tiny part of her reminded her that people can lie as well. Especially the male half of the species. How often had she been lied to by men in her life? But still, the possibility of a geniune compliment was greatly appreciated...
Immediately, she realized that she must have looked very rude, as if she were trying to drown out the two speaking. "So the teacher's your Dad? That's gotta be a lot of pressure," Garu said. The scythe made sure her face didn't feel so warm before tossing a look over her shoulder and replying, "Nah, Spikey-sensei treats Sayuri as the class pet. If not her, that mutt is. I wasn't aware that pets were even allowed at school..." |
Despite calling him a mutt, Karma had to admit she kinda liked Kuro-rii. But not even Sayuri knew that. Or, at least the weapon hoped."Please, Sayuri, don't do that..." Karma said. "The only thing worse than Black Star's annoying yell is your shrill one. It's way too early, so please don't..." She stopped at the tall doors of the classroom. A sign hung on the wall above, saying, "Class Crescent Moon". It had been her mother's class before her. "The more things change, the more things stay the same..." she muttered to herself. Pushing open the classroom doors, the scythe began to feel a little lightheaded. Her vision blurred to black for a moment then suddenly returned. It had been happening almost every day at school recently, so it didn't bother her much anymore. She figured it was stress from school that caused it, nothing more.[/div]

"I hope so. Would make being a meister a bit difficult without one I would imagine." He said, feeling a bit unsure of himself. "But I'll keep my eyes open." He started to say when Sayuri tugged on his arm. His first reaction was to tense up but he followed her along with no complaints, only an look of uncomfortableness told of what he felt on the inside.
"Surpassed the Gods?" he repeated in a more questioning tone. He was skeptical anyone who shouted like that could surpass the gods. He imagined the person to at least a little bit more reserved. They would be a lot of responsibility.
When the other girl talked to him smiled a little bit, thinking he caught the hints of a blush. "Well I'm sure this will be interesting at the very least."

"That's right, Garu-boy! You WILL find a partner. If you don't, I'll... I'll eat Karma's scalpel!"
She wasn't worried about having to follow through with it. Sayuri never lost bets. Ever.
Sayuri jumped up the steps once inside the classroom, settling into a seat in the middle of the lecture-hall-like room, and crossing her legs. It was a bit chilly in the room, but Sayuri didn't mind. It was a lot better than the sweltering Nevada weather outside. But she still wished she had thought to bring a jacket or something. Sayuri hated to cover up the outline of a star on her shoulder, though. Daddy had told her to be proud of it when Mommy had finally given in and let her get it. ...Anyway, the room would warm up some once more students - and the teacher - arrived.
"Yeah, he's surpassed the gods alright. Made Mommy into a Death Weapon, saved the world a few times... All in a day's work for a Star!" Sayuri smiled, waving her hand dismissively. She leaned forward like a tabloid reported interviewing a celebrity. "Soooo, any of your family go to school here, or are you a first gen?" She asked, trying to make conversation. ((Sorry for the sucky post you guys. ))

"Why is my scalpel suddenly on the line here?" Karma growled at her meister. But she knew that Sayuri was right about Garu finding a weapon, for two reasons. One: there were plenty of unmatched weapons at the school. This Garu character had to be able to resonate with at least one of them. And two: Sayuri never lost a bet. In fact, the scythe had sworn off any bets with Sayuri. "That is the last time I am ever wearing a pink dress..." |
she thought to herself. As the three took their seats, Karma noticed how Sayuri shivered ever so slightly. The girl was stubborn. Her father had taught her to always have her tattoos showing, even if it was below freezing. The weapon sighed and shrugged off her jacket. She'd rather be cold herself than watch Sayuri suffer, so she threw the jacket to the blue-haired girl."You forget who the real hero was, Sayuri. While I will admit Aunt Tsubaki and Spikey-sensei did help, Mom was the real hero who saved the world," the scythe corrected her meister. Turning to Garu, she asked, "You know Maka Albarn, right? Well, she's Maka Evans now, if you wanna get technical. Beat the Kishen Ashura and all that jazz. That's Mom." Karma wasn't exactly one to brag, but her mother deserved all the praise she gave her. "Wish I could have been a meister like her instead of a weapon like that son of a..." She cut herself short, looking at Sayuri. Her meister hated it when the weapon swore. "...gun..." she tacked on at the end."Sooo... yeah, what about you? Hemming's not exactly a common name around here, but maybe your mom was a student here or something?" Mom would be proud of her. She could actually make conversation like a normal human being. Well, at least for a little while. She could at least pretend to be interested in a conversation, but even that got old quickly. She scanned the room as more students entered the classroom. "Finally, not the only ones here..." she thought.[/div]

Garu gave a bit of an awkward smile towards the both of the girls as an almost familial squabble is traded between the two of them. "Well I just hope, whoever they might be. I just hope that whoever it might be we'll be as close as you two are." However genuine the statement itself might be, it felt forced, almost faked coming from him, at least in his mind. It was almost as if he was saying he wanted someone to be around. Like that would ever happen.
When the chat was shifted to the subject of family he tensed up a tiny bit. Just what exactly could he say? "My mother and father are witches, as am I?" Somehow in his analytical mind, he didn't exactly think that would go over well. Especially who these two were naming as their parents. Black Star and Maka Albarn. His Father had fought both of these people. Once of them Maka Albarn even sliced off his fathers tail in battle.
He had to come up with something and fast. "First generation, I hope to make my folks proud." He had to play it cool. If he said the wrong thing, acted the wrong way, he could be found out. Not only that, but by the daughters of those his father fought against. Just his luck.
